Learning Throat Anatomy – When we speak, we produce sound. This sound is possible to be heard because we have the devices to produce voice or sound. One of the devices is throat. Throat is really important to use as the voice production device. It is voice impossible to have sound or voice coming out from our mouth. Thus, it is important to know the anatomy of throat itself besides we know one of the functions.

Throat Anatomy

Inside throat, there is a vocal cord. The use of vocal cord is to produce sound or voice. The vocal cord is covered and protected by the cartilage and muscles that are in throat. Throat is located inside the neck. Besides the vocal cord, throat consists of pharynx and larynx. The pharynx is used as the canal where meal passes through to the stomach.

Throat has the muscle tissues which is called epiglottis. Epiglottis is located among trachea and esophagus. Epiglottis prevents meal interrupting the respiration system. In other words, it helps us avoid to get chocked. If we are chocked, it can be assumed that there is food coming through the throat so it interrupts the air breathing.

As explained above, getting chocked can be avoided. If we are eating, it will be better if we do not speak. When we are speaking while eating, it gives chance for meal eaten by us to interrupt the air that we breathe in. Avoiding speaking while eating is highly recommended because sometimes it is a kind of habit to speak while eating, so it is the best way for us to avoid being chocked. It is also not a good habit to have a conversation when speaking.

Furthermore, in Indonesia, there is a tradition that forbids people to speak when they are eating. It is considered impolite. In Javanese tradition, one of Indonesian cultures, children are taught to not talk when they are having breakfast, lunch or even dinner.

Thus, the function of throat allows us to speak and to breathe. Learning the throat anatomy will help us improve our knowledge of our own body.
